Apollo 13 Astronaut Jack Swigert Signed Dec. 1968 Speeding Ticket + Letters NASA
So, after Jack was likely following activities at the Johnson Space Center for Apollo 8’s successful mission and return to Earth Splashdown on Dec. 27, 1968, he also likely got to leave work a bit early and was maybe preparing to celebrate with others. Maybe a little too anxious to get somewhere quick as he got pulled-over for speeding in his Karmann Ghia. I’d guess the cop gave him a break when he may well have been doing over 70 and only fined him for going over the limit by 10 mph which would result in the lowest possible fine (see back of the ticket) but Jack wanted to dispute it anyway… You’ll receive the original ticket which appears to be the 3rd carbon that was presented to Swigert (the original pen-signed copy would have been retained, temporarily anyway, by the issuing officer) plus the correspondence where Swigert made efforts to postpone his hearing to dispute the ticket. I don’t really know how these items originally came to market but since the letters from the Court Clerk’s office are original and hand-signed, these items would have originally been received by Swigert as they are addressed to him personally at his home. How things turned out for Jack on this I also don’t know but I’d guess he decided that it wasn’t worth the court appearance after all particularly as he wasn’t able it seems to get a date that worked for him. The date of the ticket and his date of birth were also penned directly on this copy and are therefore not part of what was copied by the carbon sheet. I have other NASA items currently listed.
