Handwritten 6 page letter (3 sheets written on both sides) dated December 27, 1956 to his son’Bumby’ (John) regarding family and financial matters with overtones of mental health (or lack of it). Includes envelope addressed in Hemingway’s hand to John Hemingway. Signed’Papa’ with a circle (EH’s sign off of love to his family and close friends). Papa wrote between 6,000-7,000 letters in his lifetime and there are very few available for sale (most are archived in the JFK Library). Even rarer are letters of this length. In many respects, each lengthly letter is a’short story’ capturing a snapshot of Hem’s brilliance (madness and meanness) for living life fully. Letter was written in Paris and mailed to Cuba. Last page reference to’black ass': the’black ass’, Hemingway used to call these rages, which could last for weeks, cause stark-awake insomnia, prompt not just new expression but seeming promises, guarantees, of self-destruction. From Hemingway’s Boat by Paul Hendrickson. This is believed to be an unpublished letter therefore only the first, fourth and last pages are shown in this listing. Should you require more detail, etc. Please let me know. Hemingway letters in his hand are hard to find and letters beyond 2 pages are incredibly rare.
