William Lendrum”Billy” Mitchell [1879 1936] was a United States Army general who is regarded as the father of the United States Air Force. Mitchell began his military career 1898 and was a veteran of the Spanish American War. During World War I he gained experience working with the French and British Air Forces and was given command of all American air combat units in France and ended the war as the Chief of the Air Service. During the 1920’s Mitchell began conducting and perfecting aerial bombing of military ships which caused difficulties with the navy and army commanders but eventually caused the military budget to include more funds in the development of air power. In 1926 Mitchell resigned from the service after after a highly disputed court-martial. The letter is typed on the letterhead of the War Department Air Service, Office of the Chief and dated June 7, 1921. The letter is a response to a collector and is signed”Wm. Mitchell” in black fountain pen above his typed rank as Brigadier General, Air Service, Ass’t Chief of Air Service. The letter measures 6.50 x 5.75 inches, it trivial toning/soiling and surface wear otherwise it is in very good condition and displays very well. The display has been centered around an attractive b/w formal military image of the general and mounted to the right of the photograph is the signed letter as described above. Mounted below is a professionally engraved metal plaque which reads as follows,”William Mitchell The Father of The United States Air Force. December 29, 1879 – February 19, 1936. Spanish – American War & World War I. Distinguished Service Cross – Distinguished Service Medal – World War I Victory Medal – Congressional Gold Medal.’ The display has been professionally assembled with great attention to details and triple matted as follows. The outer matte in a blue linen which has been accented with a burgundy and a dark blue inner matte. The display has been assembled in a unique cherry wood frame which is engraved with the American Flag’s stars and stripes to the dimensions of 18.00 x 15.50 inches. The autograph of general Mitchell is exceedingly rare to obtain for the military collector.
