An interesting autograph letter from Louis Napoleon Bonaparte (later Napoleon III) bound with his book on artillery. Histoire du canon dans les armées modernes , par le citoyen Louis Napoleon Bonaparte. Bound with an autograph letter signed by Louis Napoleon Bonaparte, dated 9 Mars, 1836 and addressed to Barry O’Meara. Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte was the nephew and heir of Napoleon I. He was President of the Second Republic of France, the first to be elected by a direct popular vote. Prevented from running for another term, he staged a coup in 1851, naming himself emperor as Napoleon III. O’Meara was the physician who accompanied Napoleon I to his exile at St. The letter indicates that Louis Napoleon is sending O’Meara his work on artillery. The letter and pamphlet have been bound (with a number of blanks) into half green morocco over decorative paper-covered boards, with gilt titles and’N’ to the spine. The letter is tipped in at the first blank with tape. There is an additional blank page with the original seal taped there, as well as a pencil note describing the letter. Mounted to the first blank is an old catalogue description (from a bookseller or autograph dealer) detailing the contents of the letter. Mounted to the next blank is an article from The Sphere dated September 22, 1906, describing the letter and going into a brief description of O’Meara’s life after leaving St. Mounted to the third blank is a reproducton of the letter (possibly from the same Sphere piece). The binding presents nicely. There is some sun-fading to the spine and light rubbing to the extremities and edges, along with a scuff to the rear cover. Two bookplates to the front endpapers: A. Broadley to the front pastedown, and David and Anne Huxley to the front free endpaper. There is a library bookplate to the verso of the front free endpaper, indicating the item had been a gift to the Groton School from Mr. David Huxley (this bookplate has been stamped WITHDRAWN). The letter has a couple splits at the bottom edge (one at one of the folds). The pamphlet has some scuffing to the front cover (it looks like someone erased a name at the top edge and erased the price), and the library’s seal has been embossed to the cover. Some tape is visible at the spine of the pamphlet, and there is some light wear to the edges, although the interior appears clean. Please contact me with questions.
