The letter says as follows: Dear Mashihiro: / Many thanks for your very nice letter. In regard to the founding / of McDonald’s, your real father is correct. / My brother and I founded McDonald’s in 1940. This was in San / Bernardino, California. We never even met Ray Kroc until 1954. / We conceived the idea of what is now called “fast food” in 1948. / In 1953, my brother and I began a franchise program of McDonald’s. / Our first franchise agent was a man named William Tansey. We opened / 9 McDonald’s in 1953 but Mr. Tansey became ill and had to withdraw / from the franchised program. / Please tell your father I want to congratulate him for knowing who / really founded McDonald’s. / Again, Mashihiro, many thanks for your letter and I hope that someday / we may meet. The Japanese have been very good to McDonald’s and I also want to thenk (sic) them for their wonderful support. / Sincerely, / (signature) / Richard J.
